I’ve never realized this before, but it’s hard to try to explain the way Dutch see freedom of speech if you haven’t grown up here.
How do you explain that it’s legal to say things that other people would consider hateful? And that basically, when something like this happens, everybody just kind of rolls their eyes and moves on with their life? That it basically has no impact on life in the Netherlands what so ever?
That doesn’t mean that we’re a problem-free country. We’re not. But we’re closer than nearly every other country in the world.
